MUSICAL BEGINNINGS – new Fall 2016!

Arts for All!

MUSICAL BEGINNINGS focuses on young children, parents and teachers coming together and having a great time with music and movement! The educational goal is to give each child a lifelong love of music and a foundation for learning. Musical Beginnings is based on research that demonstrates the benefits of music and movement at each stage of a child’s development. We start from where each child is, regardless of age and musical readiness, and provide activities that stimulate mind, body and creative play.

Christine McElhennyChristine McElhenny grew up in the Coal Region of Pennsylvania, singing in community choirs and performing in school musicals from a young age. She holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology from Lafayette College in Easton, PA, where she continued voice instruction and enjoyed moving and performing in Black Box theater productions. She moved to Geneva in 2009. She and her two daughters were first exposed to St. Peter’s through a similar music and movement class; both girls are still students of the Arts Academy today. Christine believes parenting is a gift and that working with children is an honor. She looks forward to serving the community in this creative way.

CURRICULUM OUTLINE:

Musical Beginnings: Listen and Move. Play and Grow.

Children are natural sounders and movers. Musical Beginnings, the Arts Academy’s new movement and music program for young children, provides a relaxed and playful environment for children to express and discover their voices and their body’s creative movement. The classes provide developmentally appropriate experiences for children ages newborn to six. The lessons are intended to nurture a lifelong joy of music and movement.

Musical Beginnings generates the delight of babies, the wonder of toddlers, and the engagement of preschoolers to emerge both independently and as part of the classroom community. Children are given space and encouragement to observe, explore, be active and process the material and others’ responses in their own ways, in a fun, patient, and encouraging environment.

What do we do in class?

* Happy singing and sound making

* Imaginative storytelling

* Actively modeling and participating

* Listening and exploring percussion instruments

* Enjoying movement with scarves, hoops, balls and tumble-around play

* Sharing ideas in class that inspire more play and positive moments at home

Decades of literature espouse how and why music and movement education are invaluable for the physical, social-emotional, cognitive, language and literacy components of growth. One eloquent quote that speaks of these benefits is as follows:

“Resiliency – to bounce back after a disturbing event – is not something we are born with; it must be learned and sometimes that takes many years. There is no vehicle more joyful and playful for providing such training than early childhood music and movement.” (Dee Joy Coulter, Ed.D. Neuroscience Educator).
