Founded in 1987, the Maryland State Boychoir is dedicated to preserving and fostering the boychoir tradition by providing talented boys with opportunities to sing while developing self-esteem, discipline, and character.
Performing repertoire ranging from sacred music and Gregorian chant to modern choral music and masterworks, the Tour Choir has enchanted audiences across the United States and abroad.

Abbey Ritter, Soprano

Abbey Ritter, soprano, recently graduated from Westminster Choir College (Lawrenceville, NJ) with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music education. For the past year, she has been teaching private voice and piano lessons in Bucks County, PA.
She is currently a voice student of Dr. Kathy Price, but previously studied with Dr. Rochelle Ellis at Westminster Choir College, and Wendra Trowbridge at St. Peter’s Arts Academy. Abbey began studying music at age 5, with piano lessons and choir at St. Peter’s Community Arts Academy. Abbey participated in two U.K. tours with the Senior Choir, in 2015 and 2019. She is extremely grateful for the opportunities afforded to her by the Arts Academy and is excited to be performing here to give back to the choir with this concert.

Explore connection, touch, weight, and movement through group and duet contact improvisation. Learn to improvise in physical relationship with other dancers while paying attention to the tone and responsiveness of your body. Enjoy the whole process of developing new ways to relate to gravity, intuition and movement expression in dance.
Nancy Hughes co-founded the Buffalo Contact Improvisation (CI) Jam in 2010 and was a coordinator for the Global Underscore for eight years. For 25 years Hughes has taught CI labs and classes including as an adjunct professor at Alfred University and Brockport College. She received grants from NYS DanceForce, Arts Services Initiative and NYSCA’s Support for Artists in collaboration with the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Hughes produces events such as Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts Youth Performance Workshop, featuring local choreographers collaborating and making dances with young dancers. She is currently the Interim Director of Lisa Taylor Academy of Ballet. When not dancing in museums, homes, and silos, find her teaching Pilates at her studio Center Pilates.

Pianist Brian Preston has been proclaimed “a pianist possessing real charm, with musical instincts intelligently put to work” (Tribune de Genève). In 1981 he became the first pianist since 1968 to be awarded the Artist Diploma from the Eastman School of Music where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music degrees under the tutelage of Cécile Genhart. While pursuing these degrees, he performed both Brahms Concerti with the Eastman Philharmonia in the Eastman Theatre. Preston made his New York City debut at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall with glowing reviews. “Finish and thoughtfulness made his recital an especially satisfying one.” New York Times – October 1981
Preston’s early piano training was with Otto Ortmann, former director of the Peabody Conservatory and his daughter, Dorothea. Brian Preston has been a community music education leader through his private piano studio for more than 50 years and at Nazareth College since 1991. Mr. Preston has served as the Artistic Director of the Thousand Islands International Piano Competition since 2010.

The first half of the program will include three themes and variations on well-known songs composed by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The second half of the program will contain a group of selections by Frederic Chopin.
